Imagining Aotearoa Without Prisons

Aotearoa New Zealand is consistently ranked one of the safest countries in the world, with a very low crime rate. Yet it has long had a higher level of imprisonment than most similar countries. In this talk Associate Professor Andrew Mehigan will consider how many people we really need to have incarcerated and how we might move to a world without prisons.

Dr James Mehigan is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Canterbury and a Barrister at Garden Court Chambers in London. He is broadly interested in how the state and other powerful actors are held accountable for the harms they cause, including the struggle for justice for, amongst others, prisoners, victims of police brutality and other marginalised groups.
