The Cost of Free: Exploring the True Price of Things

Would you eat a chocolate chip cookie if someone paid you to eat it? Most people won’t, even though they love cookies and money. Weird! But there’s a good reason for this: When someone makes an overly generous offer, people often imagine “phantom costs.” Rightly or wrongly people believe there must be something wrong with the cookie. Dr Andy Vonasch will talk about phantom costs, when and why people imagine them, and the consequences of this.

Bio

Dr Andy Vonasch is a Senior Lecturer Above the Bar in the School of Psychology, Speech and Hearing at the University of Canterbury. He earned his PhD from Florida State University and conducted experimental social psychology research at Yale, Pomona College, and the University of North Carolina before joining UC. Andy’s research investigates how morality shapes people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. His studies have tested what people believe about free will, how much people are willing to sacrifice for their reputations, and how people judge other people’s motives and intentions around doing good and evil.
