Where Are the Robots We Were Promised?

For centuries, we were promised robots that would not only do all our housework but also be our teachers, guides, entertainers, and caregivers. While there has been some progress in the development of social robots, they are still absent from our daily lives. Elon Musk and others continue to sell us the humanoid robotic dream and attract billions from investors. Still, we fail to address the fundamental questions of what work we want to continue to do ourselves and what work is best done by humans to start with. Introducing human-like robots also compels us to better understand who we are.
