Oral insulin: how nanotech could create a needle-free future

Insulin is a lifesaving peptide for people with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes. Overly high insulin levels can be dangerous, so insulin is administered using injections or a pump that require tight control. Meet the researcher using nanotech to develop a smart insulin tablet, which would transform how one in ten Australians take their insulin every day.

Dr Nick Hunt is an expert in developing nanotechnology in clinical settings. Join him to understand how a smart insulin tablet can be a way to manage insulin levels more precisely, eradicate needles and improve the health span of people with diabetes.

Bio

Nick is a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney and the ANZAC Research Institute at Concord Hospital. His research group develops nanotechnology platforms for the oral delivery of insulin without hypoglycaemia. The group also works on immune modulation nanotechnologies for the prevention of type 1 diabetes without immune suppression. Nick is also a co-founder and CEO of the start-up Endo Axiom that is taking these technologies to clinical trials in 2025.
