Listen and learn: the power of sound to unlock science

Our current digital era presents unique challenges for educators in fostering trust, literacy enjoyment/engagement and understanding of science - but the way back in could come from a surprising direction: music.

In this talk, composer and PhD candidate in chemistry Alexis Weaver explores how sound can bring scientific ideas to life. What does a choir vocalising an electron sounds like? Join Alexis as she bends music and science in unexpected ways, proving that learning doesn’t have to come from a textbook – it can be heard, felt, and experienced.

Bio

Alexis Weaver is a composer, sound artist and Associate Lecturer in music technology at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.  Alexis is also a PhD candidate in the School of Chemistry. If that sounds like an unusual combination, it is – but this intersection of disciplines allows Alexis to explore how sound design can engage people in science.

As a passionate composer and educator in electronic music,  Alexis has produced soundtracks for animation, short film, theatre, dance and podcasts. In 2023, Alexis was selected for a residency at La Biennale di Venezia and explored Artificial Intelligence in music at the Sydney Opera House and for the SxSW Festival.
