Doing documentary: the pleasure and pain of film production

Documentary filmmaking has taken Professor Annie Goldson around the world – from East Timor and Fiji through Mexico and Guatemala to New York and London. In this talk, Annie will discuss her long career making documentaries (and writing about them) and the pleasure and pain of film production. She’ll discuss the origins of documentary as a genre, its relationship to social change, ‘reality’ or ‘truth’, the twists and turns of documentary history and the rise of modern documentary genres such as true crime and celebrity.

Bio

Annie Goldson ONZM has produced and directed documentaries and docudramas for 30 years in the United States and New Zealand. She is also a professor of communication at the University of Auckland and produces academic articles that are published regularly in books and journals. Her films have won more than 50 awards at international film festivals, opened theatrically worldwide and have been broadcast on prestigious television channels around the globe. She recently released Red Mole: A Romance in cinemas, and her new film Refuge: A Duty to Care premiered at the Doc Edge Festival in June this year.
