Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder
Have you ever wondered what makes people beautiful and why certain features seem to be preferred as markers of physical beauty? It’s easy to identify an attractive person at a Perth city bar, but what but what if we were in a bar in Seoul? Is beauty universal or is it influenced by culture? There’s only one thing we can say for sure – drinking seems to make other people better-looking everywhere!
Bio
Associate Professor Dr Jo Elfving-Hwang (PhD, Sheffield University) is a cultural sociologist who specialises in Korean culture and society at the University of Western Australia. Her current research focuses on beauty cultures and cosmetic surgery, as well as ageing and beauty in South Korea. Jo is also an award winning university teacher.
