Our data privacy vs the algorithm
The future of data privacy in the era of machine learning.
Machine learning is touted as the frontier set to revolutionise our social world. However, as cases of data privacy breaches become common, questions are being asked about this technology’s use of our sensitive data.
Are privacy breaches the necessary price for the progress promised by machine learning? Is privacy even something we can expect in the age of AI?
Computer scientist Clément will discuss what can and cannot be done about data privacy in machine learning, from a technological point of view. What’s more, he will explore whether wrestling back control over our data can come from the algorithms themselves.
Bio
Clément Canonne is an ARC DECRA Fellow, and a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science at the University of Sydney. He obtained his PhD in 2017 from Columbia University, before joining Stanford as a Motwani Postdoctoral Fellow and then IBM Research as a Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellow.
Clément’s research focuses on understanding the fundamental limits of machine learning and developing principled approaches to data privacy.
