And the beat goes on… Exploring our extraordinary heart
Ever wondered why the heart is associated with love, how it beats relentlessly without thought of mind, or why your physical fitness changes your resting heart rate? Understanding how the body works is “physiology” and Julian is a passionate physiologist who insists “Fizziology is phun”. His talk will be no exception. The heart is the most dynamic organ in the body, and a multitasker that moves, generates electricity and produces pressure and sound. In this talk, learn how medieval archers discovered the importance of the heart’s connectivity to the brain and explore the incredible adaptations the heart undergoes in athletes, diving mammals and even giraffes. Julian will also reveal the ingenious devices used clinically to treat heart diseases, including the development of New Zealand’s world-leading bionic pacemaker. This talk will feature fascinating revelations, live demonstrations and, since laughing is good for the heart, a load of laughs!
