Doubt and belief in education
All teachers come to education with faith – we must; belief is our primary qualification. Our belief stems from the promise that education can level the playing field and create paths for social mobility. Yet persistent disparities in education outcomes raise questions about its role in promoting a fair society, while pursuing education no longer guarantees financial success. Then what does education do that is of benefit to society, and what is there left to believe in? What is the work of education?
This talk will encourage debate on why education matters to society and why society should matter to those who care about education. Instead of seeing education as a panacea for all of society’s needs, perhaps we could arrive at a smaller, sharper and more urgent mission for education.
