Has ‘lad culture’ contributed to the success of Parkway Drive?
Aussie metalcore icons Parkway Drive are just ‘normal dudes’ from Byron Bay – surfers with a serious sound. They embody a certain type of Australian masculinity, board short-wearing larrikins who subvert the trope that metal musicians are gloomy basement dwellers with a penchant for dive bars and mosh pits. In this talk, Paige and Sam argue that part of the band’s success is based on their embodiment of the Aussie larrikin, a white, cisgendered heteronormative male and its wider appeal to middle-Australia.
