(Sub)Urban Vibrations: Sex, (P)Leisure/Pleasure and Adult Retailing
Adult retailing and sex toys have moved from the margins to the mainstream, both in popular culture and the city. At this talk, we’ll explore the nature of sexual (p)leisure/pleasure seeking and the (sub)urban sexscape through the lens of adult retailing - ‘sex shops’ or ‘restricted premises’ – and discover the historical evolution, social perceptions, political reactions, cultural representations and market differentiations within the adult retailing sector in Australia and internationally.
Bio
Associate Professor Paul J. Maginn is an urban geographer and “sexademic”. He is co-editor of (Sub)Urban Sexscapes (2015) and Suburbia in the 21st Century (forthcoming).
