How South Australians won the right to die with dignity
In June 2021, after 16 failed attempts over 25 years, the South Australian parliament finally voted to legalise voluntary assisted dying in South Australia. It followed successful passage of similar legislation in Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. In this lecture we'll explore how the new law will work - including a look at the 70 safeguards making this one of the strictest voluntary assisted dying laws in the world - and how conscientious objection rules have been resolved for both individuals and institutions. We'll also take an inside look at the grassroots community campaign that galvanised support among the vast majority of MPs.
