Why are we still confessing and apologising? And for what? From religion to new media, the persistent appeal, indeed cultural demand for apology and confession tells us something about our enduring collective desire for catharsis and atonement. Join us as we explore the meaning behind distraught pleas to ‘Leave Britney alone’ and farcical YouTube apologies punctuated by crocodile tears.

Bio

Kate is a Professor in English and Creative (Life) Writing at Flinders University. She researches the ways in which people tell stories about their lives and the lives of others and the literatures and technologies they use to record these life stories. She is the author (or editor of books) including Contesting Childhood: Autobiography, Trauma and Memory (Rutgers, 2010) and the co-author (with Anna Poletti) of Life Narratives and Youth Cultures: Representation, Agency and Participation (Palgrave, 2016) and with Dr Ashley Barnwell, she is the co-editor of Research Methods for Auto/Biography Studies (Routledge, 2019).
