Virtual reality: not science fiction but in our own backyard
Imagine a world where we can solve international crimes, make our brains learn faster, and ensure our soldiers and surgeons are given the best chance of success. No need to imagine. It’s here, it’s called virtual and augmented reality and – best of all – Adelaide is leading the world in this space.
VR headsets, once the realm of science fiction, are now embedded in our homes, our workplaces, hospitals, court rooms, sporting academies and defence sectors, allowing us to use computer-generated simulations to immerse ourselves in a 3D environment and achieve amazing things.
Adelaide is home to the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments, where a team of researchers is helping to transform our industries and everyday life. Think submarines; the next generation E-suits; robotic surgery; firefighter training, flying a plane. Perhaps even taking a virtual tour in space. The sky’s the limit.
