Love and hate
Hate often makes headlines, yet love slips from the radar. In this age of internet trolls and keyboard warriors, how do we cope with online vitriol, unrelenting emotional labour and even death threats? As so-called social networks leave us feeling more alienated than connected, how are we to maintain meaningful friendships? Is resilience a cliché or the key to survival? In this talk, political philosopher and former Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane reflects on the nature of love and hate in the digital age – in Australia and beyond – and how these forces are shaping a different kind of society.
