Where do your values come from?

A hundred years ago you could have asked just about anyone in the world, rich or poor, Western or non-Western, where they get their values and beliefs from, and they could have given you a clear answer. Things are trickier today. Many people in Sydney, for example, don’t profess a religion or claim to follow a single moral code. In this talk Alex Lefebvre will suggest that lots of us here in Sydney and beyond do, in fact, have a source for our main values but don’t realise it. Its name is liberalism and it’s so much more than just a political doctrine. Marked by values of mutual respect and personal freedom, which are seen as essential to so many people, we should care very much about what happens to liberalism around the world.
